If you want the big show: Luau Kalamaku

At Kilohana Plantation outside Lihue, Luau Kalamaku stages a full production about the first Tahitian voyagers to reach Hawaii, on a center stage with lighting, drumming and plenty of fire. It is the most-reviewed luau on the island (4.3/5 from 1,830 Viator and Tripadvisor reviews) and the one repeat visitors rave about. It is also the biggest crowd, so seating tier decides your night: back-row guests in the standard section say they struggled to see, while Silver, Gold and Manor House guests are near the stage. If you want culture and a smaller crowd: Luau Ka Hikina

On the lawn of the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort in Kapaa, Luau Ka Hikina is the highest-rated show we list (4.6/5 from 847 reviews). Its hula is directed by kumu hula Leilani Rivera Low, the show explains the history behind each dance, and guests describe it as “a great little luau with big heart.” The honest trade-off: it is less flashy than Kalamaku, and seats are first come, first served, so arrive at check-in. If you want the ocean: Wailua Nui Luau or Poipu

The Wailua Nui Luau sits on a lawn over Wailua Bay behind the Hilton Garden Inn, with crafts before dinner, a prime rib carving station beside the kalua pig, a storyteller and a fire knife dancer. At $175 it is the lowest price of the Viator three; in heavy rain the show moves indoors. Staying on the south shore? The Grand Hyatt Kauai luau (from $215 including gratuity, taxes and fees) and the ʻAuliʻi Luau at the Sheraton Kauai (about $210) trade on Poipu sunsets and are booked direct.

If you are on a budget: Smith’s Tropical Paradise

The family-run garden luau at the mouth of the Wailua River has been the value choice for decades: $150 for the full evening, and a $30 show-only ticket if you would rather eat elsewhere. It books direct only, sits inside a state park (add $5 per person and $10 for parking), and often sells out weeks ahead, so reserve on its own site before planning around it.
